Tricia Berry, Director of the Women in Engineering Program (WEP) at The University of Texas at Austin, is responsible for leading the efforts on recruitment and retention of women in the Cockrell School of Engineering. She concurrently serves as Director of the Texas Girls Collaborative Project, connecting Texas organizations, companies, and individuals working to advance gender equity in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Berry received her B.S. in chemical engineering degree from the University of Texas, Austin, in May 1993 and her M.B.A. from the University of Houston, Clear Lake, in May 1999. She has been a member of the Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) since 2001, most recently serving on the WEPAN Board as President-Elect, President. and Past President from 2007-2010.

Abstract

The Women in Engineering Program (WEP) Leadership Collaborative at UT Austin brings together WEP and 13 student-led organizations, groups and committees that serve undergraduate and graduate female engineering students:

1. Society of Women Engineers (SWE) serving all undergrad women 2. Society of Women Engineers – Graduate Committee (SWE-Grad) serving all grad women 3. Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Señoritas serving all undergrad & grad Hispanic women 4. Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWiSE) serving all black women in the Cockrell School of Engineering and the College of Natural Science 5. Women in Aerospace for Leadership & Development (WIALD) serving undergrad women interested in hands-on aerospace engineering projects 6. Women in Biomedical Engineering (WBME) serving all undergrad & grad women in the major 7. Chemical Engineering Women (ChEW) serving all grad women in the major 8. Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Women (UChEW) serving all undergrad women in the major 9. Women in Civil Engineering (WICE) serving all undergrad women in the major 10. Women in Electrical & Computer Engineering (WECE) serving all undergrad & grad women in the major 11. Women in Mechanical Engineering (WME) serving all undergrad & grad women in the major 12. Women in Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (WPGE) serving all undergrad women in the major 13. Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Heart of Texas Student Chapter serving all undergrad & grad women interested in the transportation industry

The WEP Leadership Collaborative includes leadership trainings, collaboration meetings, community building, peer mentoring, and outreach initiatives. Involved are 90+ student leaders impacting 1,800+ college women and 3,000+ pre-college girls annually.

This presentation explores the impact of the WEP Leadership Collaborative on the recruitment, retention and graduation of women across the Cockrell School of Engineering. Program assessments, leadership development efforts, collaborative activities across organizations, and program facilitation/management strategies will be discussed.
