Dr. Shetty is the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of DC. Previously he held academic and administrative positions at the University of Hartford, CT, Lawrence Technological University, MI and the Cooper Union New York. He is the author of 3 text books and more than 200 publications.
Dr. Arunkumar Giriyapur is a Professor at the BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, Karnataka Stae, India. He is also the Head of Robotics Program at BVB College of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract

A new approach in Mechatronics Education through Project BasedLearning by International CollaborationAbstract Mechatronics has come a long way from being an integrating vehicle for multipledisciplines and has now emerged into a design philosophy. In the emerging scenario, one ofthe key roles in innovative engineering is being played by Mechatronics. Because of theintegrated multidisciplinary approach, the scope for innovation in product engineering is everincreasing. With rapid changes in technology and more applications becoming real-time andembedded, teaching the mechatronics course only through laboratories or course projects isnot sufficient. The leap from the traditional sequential design approach to the mechatronicsphilosophy is very big. Added to this are the various definitions that have evolved and thevarious methodologies developed for the mechatronics system design. It is certain thatmechatronics is a natural stage in the evolutionary process of modern engineering designinvolves systems thinking. If mechatronics is considered as an evolution of engineeringdesign then a formal prescriptive design process can be developed and the course deliverycan be effective with project based learning. One of the industries prescribed process for themechatronics design is the V-cycle. The V-Cycle is a graphical construct used tocommunicate a model-based design and development methodology. This paper onmechatronics curriculum envisions mechatronics as an evolutionary process of modernengineering design, emphasizing team dynamics; project based learning and perceives it as adesign philosophy.The paper addresses issues of teaching that deal with  Teaching multidiscipline collaboration,  Issues connected with reducing time to market,  Better decision making through concept evaluation?  Teaching delivering designs faster with fewer integrating issues later design stage  Teaching the entire design V-cycle?  Teaching integrating tools, languages and methodologies?  Incorporating system design practices?  Weaving the design philosophy thread through the curriculum? The course material and the prescriptive design methodology have been developedby the School of Automation & Robotics at B.V.B. College of Engineering and Technology,India, College of Engineering at the University of Hartford, USA and the School ofEngineering and Applied Sciences, University of DC, USA. Various tools and methodologiesare integrated and taught at key stages and the projects reviewed at regular intervals.
