Abstract

A Senior Design Project on the Kelvin-Helmholtz InstabilityStudents designed a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability test set up for the fluidslaboratory. This paper describes a project where a group of twoundergraduate engineering students in the senior design course designed, built, and tested a Kelvin-Helmholtz fluid flow apparatus for visualizationsof instabilities. The paper will also provide details of outcomes for theproject, faculty observations, and assessment of student work. The students had to choose materials, minimize production cost, anddetermine fabrication techniques for the apparatus. Students designed theapparatus using SolidWorks, and ANSYS Fluent software was used tosimulate the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.
