AB  -                    A Systematic Approach to ABET AccreditationWhile accreditation is indeed a continual process, the Self Study required for ABETAccreditation is a periodic process that can be facilitated using a systematic approach to conductthe Self Study and generate the report. This paper presents a multi-year approach toaccreditation applied within Yale’s Program of Chemical Engineering to understand theaccreditation policies and procedures, investigate mechanisms to record and track performance,and detail a series of continuous improvements within the program. The systematic approachincludes two key components: the creation of an internal electronic messaging system todistribute information and serve as a repository of submitted work, and a School of Engineeringwide system to track the achievement of Student Outcomes.The electronic messaging system was created to establish and distribute a timeline for the reviewand to serve as a single access point for the process. This system provided guidance from theaccreditation coordinator to members of the Chemical Engineering faculty regardingaccreditation policies and procedures and tracked the Program’s progress while conducting theSelf Study. The system was also used as a portal to distribute draft chapters of the Self Study forreview and as an archived record of the completed work.This paper will also detail a system to track the achievement of Student Outcomes within each ofthe program’s courses. The system takes advantage of the grading mechanism used within eachcourse and aligns individual assignments, exams, labs and reports with specific StudentOutcomes. The performance of each student in the course is used to determine that course’scontribution to achieving each Student Outcome. Because this method is implemented in eachcourse, the data from the individual courses is easily aggregated to provide a comprehensiveassessment of the Program’s performance meeting Student Outcomes. This systematic approachto ABET accreditation has improved the Program’s ability to address issues and manage theaccreditation process.
