Abstract

The implementation and dissemination of learning aids for education has been an ongoing research for the last few decades. The available computer technology has made it imperative for educators to adapt their teaching methodologies to incorporate e-learning supplements. A topic specific survey of educational tools for Electrical and Computer Engineering conducted by the author revealed that the available e-learning aids can mainly be used as ‘study guides’ or ‘homework solvers’. However, none actually serve as a ‘practice’ software to allow the students to emphasize their knowledge. Presented here is a tool to serve as a web-based application that allows students to practice the knowledge they acquired in Electrical and Computer Engineering. As a starting point, a Karnaugh Map evaluator was built as an example of the proposed method of learning. The Interactive Karnaugh Map Evaluator is a tool to allow students to practice the minimization process of designs in Digital Logic but without providing the solution so as not to serve as a ‘home work solver’. It achieves that by allowing a random refresh option so students can work on different Maps with different percentages of ‘Don’t Care Conditions’ and by evaluating the solution step by step and prompting the student of the result. It also provides a minimal expression check capability not available in other software. This capability lets the user know whether their design is minimal. For dissemination purposes, this is a tool in a proposed suite of similar tools available to the public at www.digital-logic.org.

The main objective of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) 1 is to improve the overall quality of engineering education. This can be done through improving communication skills, encouraging team work, and providing an environment that allows the student to acquire the knowledge they need through technology as well as traditional methods.
