AB  -        An E-Learning Approach to Data Information Literacy EducationFollowing the announcement from the National Science Foundation that all grant fundingproposals submitted after January 2011 must include a data management plan, academic librarieshave been experimenting with ways of providing support and education for researchers at theirinstitutions. At the XXX University, we saw strong demand for guidance on writing andcomplying with this requirement. This high level of interest required a cross-disciplinaryapproach to teaching data management skills to researchers from various subject backgrounds.Although successful, this approach did not facilitate in-depth domain-specific skill building.Starting in the October 2011, the XXX University, along with partners at XXX University, XXXUniversity and XXX University collaborated on a project to learn more about the domain-specific educational needs of graduate students in the area of data information literacy. Fundedby a grant from the Institute of Library and Museum Services, each research team conducted in-depth interviews with multiple graduate students and their research advisor from five academicscience disciplines. At the XXX University we looked at the data management needs of aresearch group in the structural engineering area of the civil engineering department. Based onour findings, in Fall 2012 the XXX University launched an instructional response to address thedata management skills absent from the curriculum. This paper outlines our instructionalapproach of utilizing a modularized e-learning format to reach busy graduate students through anextracurricular data management course. The paper also discusses our methods of assessmentand student feedback.
