An International Collaboration for the Study of Defects in Castings

Abstract

This work describes an international collaboration project that has been established between Mississippi State University (MSU) and the CIDAUT Foundation in Spain. The project will be funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the International Research and Education in Engineering (IREE) program. The research area to be investigated deals with the formation of defects during solidification processes, and in particular, with the problem of the confluence weld in aluminum alloy castings. The research program proposes to perform several experimental and modeling tasks to investigate links between configuration and process parameters and measured defects. A major component of the project is the recruitment and participation of an undergraduate minority student from MSU. In this document, we describe the project phases, organization, logistics and particular aspects involved with the participation of an undergraduate in an international project and we report some preliminary results in the area of modeling defects in castings.

Introduction

This work describes an international collaboration project that has been established between Mississippi State University (MSU) and the CIDAUT Foundation in Spain. The project proposal was recently awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the International Research and Education in Engineering (IREE) program.

The research area to be investigated deals with the formation of defects during solidification processes, and in particular, with the problem of the confluence weld in aluminum alloy castings. It is known that the separation of flow paths during casting can produce cracks upon rejoining of the fronts due to the interaction of oxide films. The situation has been scarcely studied, even though most complex castings contain dozens of confluence welds. This is particularly evident in the case of multiple gating, which can lead to the confluence of several flow fronts. The research program proposes to perform several experimental and modeling tasks to investigate links between configuration and process parameters and measured defects.

A major component of the project is the recruitment and participation of an undergraduate minority student from MSU. The student will receive technical training under a Research Experience to Undergraduates (REU) subaward of this project, after which he/she will spend three months in the foreign counterpart, performing the project tasks under the guidance of the CIDAUT and MSU participating researchers. The training period in preparation for the visit at the foreign institution includes theoretical, experimental and modeling aspects. The objective of the training is to have the student arrive at the foreign lab with a well defined work plan and the necessary technical background to perform the required tasks with supervision but minimum instruction. Preparation in Spanish language and familiarization with the culture and geography of Spain are also included in the student training.
