Robert A. ”Bob” Chin is a full professor in the Department of Technology Systems, East Carolina University, where he has taught since 1986. He is the current director of publications for the Engineering Design Graphics Division and the editor for the Engineering Design Graphics Journal. Chin has also served as the Engineering Design Graphics Division’s annual and mid-year conference program chair, and he has served as a review board member for several journals including the EDGJ. He has been a program chair for the Southeastern Section and has served as the Engineering Design Graphics Division’s vice chair and chair and as the Instructional Unit’s secretary, vice chair, and chair.

Abstract

Assessing the Technology Management Preparation of Design TechnologistsAn investigation into the technology management preparation of design technologists based onstudent performance on a technology management certification examination was undertaken.While the program outcome, means of assessment, criterion for success, results, actions taken(use of results), and follow-up to actions taken served as the framework for this study, the studyalso sought to identify factors that contributed to the students performance. These additionalfactors included, performance on a pretest, the status of management of course completion, andminors being pursued by those students. In an initial study, which examined the performance ofdesign technologists on their knowledge of technology management, the criterion for successincluded (a) a 91% pass rate for all who sat for the exam and (b) for those who did not pass, theirnumber of correctly answered exam items will fall within 10 correct answers of the passingscore. In this initial study, 88.5% of the students passed and for those students who did not pass,all answered a sufficient number of exam items correctly to earn exam scores within 10 correctanswers of the passing score. In response, actions taken (use of results) were identified anddeployed based on what the students felt contributed to their performance. While additional datahave been collect, these data were not part of the initial study and the report published. Theseadditional data included the outcome of actions taken: in response to the actions taken, 67% ofthe students passed. For those who did not pass, yet earned grades for the course in which thecertification exam was administered, all answered a sufficient number of exam items correctly toearn exam scores within 10 correct answers of the passing score. In response, actions taken (useof results) were identified and deployed based on what the students felt contributed to theirperformance. Based on the data collected, (a) pretest performance does not correlate withcertification exam performance, (b) management course competition appears to have aninfluence on exam performance, (c) the pursuit of selected minors appears to have an influenceon exam performance, and (d) approaches to exam preparation and time management during theexam by the students influences student performance on the exam. The additional data collectedwill be analyzed and data will continue to be collected to more conclusively offer substantiverecommendations.
