AB  - I teach at a liberal arts college with an emphasis on teaching. As faculty members, we are asked to gear our research toward undergraduate students. We spend eight weeks in the summer doing research. I have done three of them so far. In this poster, I will explain these three projects, how the students get involved, and their educational outcomes. The first project was designing a touchless piano. I had a student who was a pianist and was interested in doing research over the summer. I found the idea of a gesture-controlled piano online, and two of my students followed the steps of the open-source project and added new features to the final design. In this project, students use both their liberal arts and engineering education. The next project had a space theme. My students were interested in space debris and mitigation techniques. Inspired by the net-launcher idea. My student designed and built a net launcher that used compressed air to eject the net. This project brought the subject of space debris to the attention of the college’s community. The third project was building a small wind tunnel. I had two students working on this project, one junior and one freshman. One of them had taken the fluid mechanics class, which was a must if they were to work on the wind tunnel. It was an educational project, and the students used many technical skills they gained in design and manufacturing classes. I was hoping for the wind tunnel to be usable for the fluid mechanics class, but some of the not-very-wise design choices prevent it from being a reliable machine. This poster's goal will be to showcase the research/independent project options for undergrad students in a liberal arts college with an engineering program.
