Abstract

Power electronics convert, control and distribute electrical power across our national grid system and in an enormous array of commercial, consumer, and military products. The future of power electronics is centered on wide band gap (WBG) semiconductor technologies such as the ones used in LED lighting. WBG-based power electronics are extremely compact and energy efficient, which translates to lower manufacturing and operating costs. But, there are several new skills that must be mastered in order to effectively and efficiently design with WBG-based components. The Education and Workforce Development (EWD) teams at the PowerAmerica Institute and the FREEDM Center, both at NC State University, are collaborating on the creation of a Wide Band Gap Academy. “The Future of Power Electronics: Wide Band Gap Devices”, is the first in a planned series of blended short courses that target electronics educators and working professionals.
