Abstract

In this GIFTS paper we discuss the Engineering Equity Summit, an annual event representing an evolution of extensive collaborative efforts with student leaders to integrate equity into the greater engineering community at the university. The event, held each April at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, was developed to bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and industry partners to promote education, awareness, and action on issues of equity and inclusion in the engineering community.

As part of The Pennsylvania State University 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, the university’s goals related to equity, diversity, and inclusion include to “foster a culture of respect and inclusion that values the experiences and perspectives of faculty, staff, and students” [1]. From this Strategic Plan, the College of Engineering (CoE) developed an Equity Action Plan with specific action items to engage stakeholders in the equity action process and deepen their knowledge and leadership [2]. Although in previous years, university’s stakeholders advanced these goals independently, prior to 2021 there had not been an established space unifying all stakeholders in equity action efforts. Thus, the College of Engineering Diversity Roundtable (DRT) - a coalition of CoE Student Organizations dedicated to improving equity and inclusion for underrepresented students through advocacy, outreach, and building connections - envisioned a framework for the Engineering Equity Summit to create such a space.

The Engineering Equity Summit is structured as a keynote session followed by a series of talks, workshops, and discussions from invited guest speakers from within and outside of the university, surrounding a central theme. In this framework, students in DRT assist with event planning through theme development, agenda organization, speaker suggestions, and curation of concurrent session topics, all derived from their biweekly discussions during the academic year. Executive Administration, Faculty, and Staff from the CoE Center for Engineering Outreach and Inclusion provide financial and logistical support for the event as well as opening and closing remarks from CoE Deans. Past themes include “Evolving Behaviors to Make Strides in Policy” (2021), “Mentorship” (2022), and “Community” (2023).

With inclusion in mind, the annual event is advertised to all university stakeholders as well as industry partners in the Industrial and Professional Advisory Council, resulting in 66 virtual attendees in 2021 and 61 hybrid attendees (both virtual and in-person) in 2022. Among these attendees include cohorts of students that serve as ambassadors of equity and inclusion, including the Clark Scholars and Multicultural Engineering Program Envoys. By requiring participation in the Engineering Equity Summit, we ensure that these students continue to build on their cultural competencies and equity knowledge as leaders.

The paper will review our process of working with student leaders of the DRT to create and iterate the Engineering Equity Summit and best practices for unifying, engaging, and educating stakeholders. We will describe lessons learned from the event as well as potential future impacts and areas for assessment.
