AB  - In this poster, we review the adoption of the Early Research Scholars Program (ERSP), originally developed at the University of California San Diego, to our institution, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The goal of the program is to encourage enrollment of students from marginalized backgrounds in the field of computing. ERSP provides an introduction to fundamental research skills and experience to undergraduates in the first two years of their degree. In this poster, we elaborate on the changes we make to effectively adopt ERSP at a mid-tier research school, with a larger minoritized population. What makes UIC a good fit in contrast to other ERSP partner institutions is that we are primarily a Hispanic serving institution, with 40% of the student body, which is Pell-grant eligible. Also, as UIC is mainly a commuting school, programs like ERSP are crucial for helping students develop a sense of community on campus. ERSP is structured so that students work in a cohort-model wherein support is provided via class meetings, research meetings, and team meetings. The first run of the program at UIC, which was in Fall 2019, consisted of 11 Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduates and 17 Computer Science undergraduates. At UIC we have adjusted the model in the following ways: (1) extended the field of computing which was previously Computer Science students to also include ECE students, (2) revamped the 4 quarter program structure to fit within 2 semesters, and (3) reduced from a 4-credit hour class to a 1-credit hour class. We discuss the methodology and effectiveness of these changes and hope that our insights will be beneficial for other institutions that are seeking to implement similar programs.
