Abstract

Incorporating SCADA modules into Introductory Programmable Logic Controller CurriculumAbstract: The purpose of this presentation is to help community college instructors incorporatebasic SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) training into an introductory course inProgrammable Logic Controllers. The challenge of presenting SCADA training at the communitycollege level is the complexity of the subject and the limited time in what may be a singlecourse offering as part of a degree or certificate pattern. The training is based on researchperformed for the National Science Foundation grant CREATE in an effort to bring SCADAtraining related to alternative energy into community college curriculum. The presentation willsummarize the NSF CREATE research and the challenges of delivering the instruction on how tocreate a SCADA interface for energy monitoring and motor control applications. Thepresentation will show how the training incorporates free or demo software packages, andshows step by step configuration and connectivity of both hardware and software.The presentation will show how to create training apparatus to deliver the SCADA training fromcommon hardware store components and low cost online electronic sources. The presentationwill also show how portions of the solar monitoring training can be delivered indoors with asmall inverter and DC power supply or outdoors with solar panels. As an alternative to actualsolar equipment the presentation will show how a simple load box and power supply cansupplement the training. The presentation will show how basic networking topics areincorporated into the training. An Ambient-Weather weather monitoring station will be usedto demonstrate the connectivity to either a Programmable Logic Controller or a MODBUSgateway to send data to the SCADA system over a network. The presentation will also showhow the Programmable Logic Controller can be bypassed to send data directly to the SCADAsystem thus simplifying the overall training so that even high schools could adopt it with justone weather station and a MODBUS gateway for a whole classroom of students.
