Abstract

Indo Japanese Program on Water RocketsAbstractEngineers of the 21st century need to work on multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural projects. Allthe attempts should, therefore, be to provide such experiences to engineering students. The paperpresents an experiment of a joint Indo-Japanese program to design, develop and launch waterrockets. Teams including faculty members worked together for about three months and realizedthat it was an enormously enriching experience. The project had three parts – fabrication of waterrocket, design and development of a sensor system and analysis of the launch. The Japaneseteam fabricated water rockets, each team designed and developed its own sensor system andanalyzed the launches. Initially, the teams worked remotely from their own location and in thelast week of the project the Japanese team visited India. That week was spent on developingwater rockets, testing sensor systems, actual launches and their analysis. While the participantscherished their international experience and gave satisfaction rating of 4.82 on the 5 point likertscale, they felt that they should have spent more time preparing for the visit including learningthe other language and having more communication. Even though, water rocket was a novel ideaand resulted in ample technical learning, the cultural learning was more significant.
