Dr. R.Murugesan is presently heading Anna University of Technology Madurai as Vice-Chancellor. He is the first Vice-Chancellor of this state owned University which is established by the Act of Government of Tamilnadu in June 2010. His vision is to make this University a premier institution that offers world class technical education thereby generating a quality work force that will drive our country towards a glorious future.

Dr. R. Murugesan was born in Porto-Novo, Chidambaram Taluk, Tamilnadu. After obtaining Diploma in Civil Engineering at Muthiah Polytechnic, Chidambaram he joined the College of Engineering, Guindy for his Undergraduate Engineering Course in Civil Engineering. He did his M.E. (Structural Engineering) and subsequently Ph.D in Civil Engineering at Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore in the area of Structural Performance of Rehabilitated R.C. Frames.

He believes that economic development of a nation depends on the quality of human resource and higher education becomes the basis for the overall human development of the country. He has visited World’s renowned Universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA, National University of Singapore, Singapore, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia, St. Josephs University, Philadelphia, USA, and Villonova University, Philadelphia, USA. The experience and exposure earned during the visit gives an helping hand in building the Anna University of Technology Madurai matching with international standards.

Dr. R.Murugesan has an illustrious career of over 33 years in academic arena and has about 31 international journal/conference publications and 30 national journal/conference publications to his credit. He has authored 18 books in various disciplines. He was a National Executive Council Member of ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education) for seven terms and also served as National Students Advisor for Institution of Engineers. He was a Member of the Syndicate of Anna University of Technology Coimbatore. He also played a vital role as the Member of Committee for making Tamil as medium of instruction in engineering institutions. He is actively involved in the Canada India Institution Cooperation project and made remarkable achievements in conducting various technical-knowledge and skill development programmes for women, organizing ‘Personality Development Programs’ for students and staff and summer schools as well. He has visited USA, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, United Kingdom, Belgium, Netherland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Mauritius, France, Dubai, Tunisia, Egypt, China, South Korea and Australia. He has an inborn acumen towards research and has guided several research scholars. He is also a life member in various professional bodies like Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi, Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata, Quality Circle Forum of India, Hyderabad and Institution of Valuers, Kolkata.

Being a humane and philanthropist by nature he emphasizes that service to the society has to be given the utmost importance. He was the District Governor (324 B1) of the Lions Clubs International for the period July 2005 to June 2006. He was actively involved in conducting various community development activities that includes, Tree Plantation Programmes, Blood donation camps and Eye donation camps, Dental and Medical camps, Leadership programmes for school and college students and Self help group development programs.

Abstract

ASEE INTERNATIONAL LEARNING FORUM 9-10, June , 2012, San Antonio, USA International Collaboration in Faculty Development for Life Long Learning Dr. R. Murugesan President, Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi, India Vice Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, Madurai, India presidentiste@gmail.com Abstract Technology has been changing very rapidly during the last few decades. Thisrapidity of change brings tremendous pressure on the educational system to identifywhat is basic and must be taught & learnt, and what needs to be imparted through selflearning or continuing education programs. The challenge for India is to build technicalskills into the mindboggling mass of working age professionals. It is clear therefore thatthe prospect of economic prosperity for India is critically predicated on the strengths ofIndia’s technical education. Milton Freedman, a Nobel Prize winning economist observedthat, “the great untapped resource of technical and scientific knowledge available toIndia for the taking is the economic equivalent of the untapped continent available tothe United States 200 years ago”. Teachers are the intellectual seeds of the future generation. Typically, in a lifetime, each teacher influences the character and moulds the ability of a thousandstudents. Teachers have to be made aware of the changing requirements of theirdisciplines, the interaction with other disciplines and the need for life-long learningattitude. New disciplines are emerging fast and faculties have to train themselves to beable to impart education to students in these. Teacher training and retraining needshave thus become paramount. 1 In order to cope with the changing composition of student population on the onehand and a spectacular development in knowledge field on the other, exposure tofaculty development training programs was found inevitable. Indian Society forTechnical Education (ISTE) has been in the field of imparting faculty developmentprogram particularly for the engineering faculty in the country since 1968. Unity ofengineering concepts, increasing international cooperation in engineering activities,frequent activities of an engineer outside his national or cultural domain and often asmembers of an international engineering team are compelling us to venture intointernational collaborations for faculty development programs and lifelong learning aswell. This paper discusses a few issues related to the international collaborations infaculty development. 2
