Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present a new multi-media teaching enhancement tools for the principles of electrical engineering core course at the University of Central Florida. The new teaching environment will enhance student learning by providing innovative methods for interactive teaching and testing. Students will be able to carry on simulation on the web, virtually at any place. To demonstrate the capabilities of the web-based software, we will give the detailed description for possible ac and dc simulation on line in order to illustrate the proposed concept. Once fully implemented, the new web-based simulation tools will enhance electrical engineering learning of the basic concepts, improve design capabilities, and provide the students with the opportunity for self- evaluation and testing. In the final analysis, the web-site will provide Graphical User Interface (GUI) capabilities that reside in the client desktop, allowing students to be able to perform on-line simulation of all type of DC and AC electrical engineering problems and have the option of plotting the responses graphically. This paper gives only the first development phase of the project. More works is needed to complete the software development of the simulation component of the Circuit Mark-Up Language (CirML) module.

INTRODUCTION

Because of the recent advances in technology in terms of technical delivery capabilities and cost, the role of technology in education has never been greater [1]. The Internet has been utilized as the ideal medium to create platforms for students to use for its wide availability. Repeated studies have shown that often students in engineering core courses find it difficult to grasp the basic concepts because simply they "don’t see it". Moreover, engineering students lack the skills necessary to carry out creative design based on critical thinking process [1]. In the engineering education process a number of core classes prove to be critical in determining the success of students. These classes are typically the transition engineering courses, where successful understanding of the material affects the student performance during their remaining academic program.

Teaching the engineering transition courses is a daunting challenge for engineering faculty. As a result, there is a pressing need for developing original web-based multi-media learning environment supported by innovative and effective educational methodology to improve the undergraduate engineering curriculum, especially in the engineering transition courses.

Over the last few years, several national efforts have been initiated to develop multi-media and web- based education material [2-9]. Most of these efforts focused on developing Graphical User
