Shahnam Navaee Georgia Southern University

Dr. Navaee is currently a full professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction in the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Navaee received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Louisiana State University, and his Ph.D. in Engineering from Clemson University. Prior to his current faculty position, Dr. Navaee served in several administrative rolls. One year as the Interim Chair of the Dept. of Civil Engineering and Construction Management, and seven years as the Associate Dean of the College of Science and Technology at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Navaee’s main research interests are in the areas of solid mechanics and structures.

Abstract

Included in this paper is the description and details of a student project involving the creation of FEA simulation models using Abaqus for some of the more advanced topics explored in an introductory Mechanics of Materials course. The honors student selected for this project was initially introduced to the basic features of Abaqus by a series of tutorial sessions conducted by the faculty investigator. The student was subsequently assigned to develop the simulation models for a collection of specialized problems related to the analysis of solids during the fall of 2021. Even though the main steps for producing the selected models are essentially the same, creation of each of the models requires learning a series of skills to perform the needed specialized tasks. By undertaking the project, the selected student was familiarized with various powerful tools of Abaqus and learned how to efficiently employ these features to solve more complicated problems. The acquired set of skills will serve the student well in her future studies and professional career. The prescribed project not only significantly contributes to the academic development of the involved student, but also aids the faculty investigator in developing a series of simulation models for enhancing a Mechanics of Materials course.

Sample developed simulation models and the corresponding produced results are provided in the paper to better illustrate the significance of the project. These example files include the solutions for the following class of problems: (1) elasto-plastic deformation of bars subjected to axial loading, (2) thermal stresses in axially loaded composite members, (3) torsion of composite cylindrical shafts, (4) torsion of elasto-plastic cylindrical shafts, (5) torsion of bars with non-circular cross sections, (6) bending of composite beams, (7) and bending of elasto-plastic beams. The presented paper provides the rationale for selecting each of the selected problems and further illustrates how the solution of these problems can contribute to the development of the involved honors student and the enhancement of a Mechanics of Materials course.
