Abstract

At XYZ College, the objective has been to prepare students to be work-ready and professionally equipped for immediate employment. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) course is taught for the Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering) students as an elective during their graduation year.

The course learning outcome covers various aspects of CIM including product design and production engineering, design automation, manufacturing systems, Materials requirement planning, Manufacturing resource planning, Enterprise resource planning, Flexible Manufacturing System, etc.

Thus in addition to mastering the technical competency including innovation and problem solving skills, the students need to develop interdisciplinary skills of communication, project management, cooperation and leadership. Meeting these emerging competencies requirement is a challenge with the traditional lecture-based approach to teaching and learning. In order to combat the above listed challenges, Project Based learning methodology was identified as the most appropriate approach to teach CIM course, where the students are required to work on projects and are expected to manage complex problems related to real world. Project based learning approach has become increasingly accepted as a useful concept in education since it supports the relation between theory and practice.

To enhance the student understanding of the course and to help them prepare for the work force; course delivery methodology and the assessment strategies were modified to include project works covering various aspects of CIM. In these projects, the students work in small groups of 4-5, need to come up with CAD/CAM project ideas that involve designing the components using CAD software while taking all the constraints of manufacturing and assembly into consideration and then prepare the CAM files, machine the components, and assemble it. In addition to CAD/CAM the students are also required to include Robotic arm for automation and Flexible Manufacturing System in their project. The students are also required to prepare a project report and present their work.

The assessment strategies of the project had been modified to evaluate the projects on various aspects including innovation, problem solving skills, meeting technical aspects, project management, team work, presentation skills, etc.

This paper will discuss in detail with samples of students’ project, how this project based learning approach had a positive impact on student learning and how the students effectively took part in the learning process and also the improvements that were evident in the assessment results.
