Abstract

Project-Based Learning of System-of-SystemsThis paper reports on a hands-on project aimed at learning and experiencing the concept ofsystem-of-systems. The motivation behind this project is for students to have a mentor-basededucational experience for learning design, analysis and synthesis of multi-level systems.Students are challenged to develop an RF-based system that is capable of sensing, monitoring, communicating, and controlling a multi-vehicle system connected via network. The technicalgoal of this project is to develop a fully integrated and complete system in which vehicles thatbelong to a network can become aware of their location, communicate with nearby vehicles(sometimes with no visible line of sight) and be notified of the presence of different objectslocated in their immediate vicinity (such as obstacles and abundant vehicles). In addition, all thenetwork-connected vehicles are constantly being monitored and communicated with a centrallocation.Students have been working on multi-system development and understanding, includinghierarchical system (system-of-systems) integration. They learn how to deal with system levelcomponents from a very low level (vehicle communication and control) to a very high level (aka“Commander’s Intent”). They experience real-life implementation problems, deal with multiplesampling rates and signal processing, communication protocols, and overcome security issues. They learn how to analyze and synthesize multi-level systems, make appropriate measurementsat different system levels, understand the limitation of different components and sub-systems, aswell as deal with interactions between software and hardware components. The end result is a demonstration where a complex, functional and robust system is built andtested, for other projects to use and learn from. By implementing and integrating RFID,WIFI andIEE 802.15.4 communication protocol it is expected that the system will have several sub-systems that can identify the location of other vehicles, create awareness of its environment forevery vehicle, transfer the location data from the local vehicle to the remote user, and finallygenerate a two-dimensional representation of the vehicles location.
