Dr. Michael Maixner was graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy, and received S.M.M.E. and Ocean Engineer degrees from MIT, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served in ships as a line officer and in various engineering billets as an engineering duty officer during 25 years of naval service. Upon retirement from the navy, Dr. Maixner assumed a position on the faculty of Maine Maritime Academy, where he served as the coordinator for the marine systems engineering curriculum. He is currently a professor of engineering mechanics at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Abstract

Solar Distillation Project AbstractA detailed solar design project has been developed for use at _________________________ in asustainable energy course which entails prediction of solar position, surface insolation intensity, heattransfer modeling of a solar distillation unit, and application to other locations and environmentalconditions. The course will be offered for the first time in the spring of 2011, and includes manydifferent aspects of sustainable energy (wind, ocean, solar, geothermal, etc.; the topic which is coveredfirst, and which receives more topical coverage than most others is solar (active, passive, photovoltaic),so that a solar project was deemed most appropriate. The project’s purposes include: to reinforceclassroom instruction in solar principles, to provide detailed modeling of the heat transfer process in aspecific application (solar distillation unit), to provide practice in modular programming, and to allowapplication of the final model to parametric analyses associated with different applications. The projectwill be due in various parts, timed so that each will be due shortly after the topic material is covered inclass. While no feedback data are available, it is anticipated that the project will provide students with apractical application of the principles of basic thermodynamics and heat transfer, and of the specificprinciples associated with solar energy harvesting. Details of the project are provided, along withpossible extensions and variations for future course offerings.
