Dr. Shouling He is an associate professor of Engineering and Technology at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, where she is teaching the courses in Mechatronics Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology. Her research interests include modeling and simulation, microprocessors and PLCs, control system designs and Robotics. She has published more than 45 journal and conference papers in these research areas.

Abstract

MAKER: A Robotic Team Cleaning System This paper discusses a project for a set of autonomous commercial office cleaning robots. The set is comprised of a main large robot and two small robots. The two small robots are capable of mapping the office floor for effective cleaning with rotating brushes to push debris from corners and less easily accessible areas for the large robot to remove. The large robot is able to efficiently vacuum the office as well as empty trash and recycling bins into onboard containers. The system is developed using various DC motors, LIDAR (light detection and range) and optical sensors, 3D printed parts, and raspberry pi boards, in conjunction with ROS (Robot Operating System) framework, and CAD software. The robotic cleaning system will be used in the tightly spaced environment of the modern commercial office. The created teaming autonomous robots can perform the daily sanitation duties to satisfy the needs of a modern office. The targeted users of the system are commercial cleaning companies and other companies with large office areas and ever increasing cost of labor.
