Abstract

Students’ learning curve on Building Information ModelingAs Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes a popular topic in the construction science andengineering program curriculum. The method of teaching BIM starts to get attention in academia. It isimportant for the students to get familiar with the BIM authoring tool in order to achieve the benefits ofBIM. To effectively teach the BIM authoring tools, BIM instructors are always required to spend a bigamount of time in lab sessions. However, it is hard for instructors to decide correctly at the beginning ofthe class about how much time should be spent on each function of BIM authoring tool. This study aimsto find out the modeling time of student for each modeling skill. Students’ modeling progress has beenmonitored for two semesters. Each student is required to report their time spent on each of theelement categories they were modeling. The analysis of this study will provide BIM instructor a guidanceabout the distribution of lecture and lab session for different functions of the BIM software. In addition, this study would provide some assistant on designing the BIM class term project. The BIM instructor canprovide a more suitable project size and requirement for the students to achieve in a reasonable labtime.
