Andrew Kline a Lecturer at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He previously worked for a large general contractor in southern California specializing in Multi-Family and Commercial construction. He is a PhD student in Construction Science at Capitol Technology University. He teaches courses on Building Information Modeling, Jobsite Management, Commercial Construction, Fundamentals of Construction, and Advanced Scheduling.

Dr. Fernanda Leite is an Associate Professor in the Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds the Mrs. Pearlie Dashiell Henderson Centennial Fellowship in Engineering. She has a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering, from Carnegie Mellon University. Her technical interests include building and civil information modeling, and collaboration and coordination technologies. Dr. Leite teaches courses on Building Information Modeling, Project Management and Economics, and Sustainable Systems Engineering. Her funded research projects have focused on building and civil information modeling; 3D modeling for construction planning; autonomous 3D model generation; and virtual reality.

Eduardo Isatto is an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and a member of the Building Innovation Research Unit (NORIE) since 1997. He has a doctoral degree in Civil Engineering and a master's degree in Industrial Engineering, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. His main research interests are connected with the application of lean production to the construction industry, comprehending research areas as BIM, project management, production systems design, procurement and supply chain management, and quality and cost management. His teaching experience includes graduate courses in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia, as well as international courses on construction project management to students from USA, Turkey, Israel, and Brazil. Finance Director of the National Association of Built Environment Technology (ANTAC), in Brazil, from 2014 to 2018.

Abstract

The rapid increase of Building Information Modeling (BIM) adoption in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) has led universities worldwide to adapt their curricula to provide adequate BIM training for next-generation professionals. A variety of teaching approaches have been adopted, based on specific needs and/or local limitations. This paper describes the experiences of three major university’s courses on BIM. Each university has developed a course on BIM with the goal to educate the next generation of AEC professionals. As BIM continues to expand in the AEC industry, there is an increased demand to evolve the current Engineering and Construction curriculum. This paper will describe the lessons learned, varying approaches, successes and failures of teaching BIM at three universities. This information may assist Construction Management and Engineering programs that are interested in integrating BIM into an existing curriculum.
