Sergey Dubikovsky is Assistant Professor at Purdue University in the Aviation Technology Department. He teaches advanced aircraft materials and processes and advanced manufacturing and design process courses. His research focus is in immersive learning, problem and project-based learning, international engineering education, globalization, lean Six Sigma, and threaded and specialized fasteners. He worked previously in industry as a Design, Product, and Project Engineer. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in mechanical engineering from South Ural State University (formerly Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute) in Russia.

David Gonzales El Camino College

David Gonzales serves as the Director of the Center for Applied Competitive Technologies at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., and is an Adjunct Professor in machine tool technology. Gonzales has 30 years experience in aerospace manufacturing and is recognized as a leader in manufacturing innovation, including sustainable manufacturing and training. He has a bachelor's of science degree in business administration and a M.B.A. from the University of La Verne. Gonzales received certification in lean manufacturing at the University of Tennessee, and is Six Sigma certified. He has since provided consultation and training to numerous industry-leading manufacturing organizations in process improvement, including Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, and Sustainable Manufacturing. Starting his career in manufacturing as a machinist, Gonzales pursued higher education as a means to steadily progress to greater levels of responsibility and professional success. His experience and education led to numerous management positions in aerospace manufacturing. His business experience includes materials management, quality, and manufacturing pperations. Prior to joining El Camino College in 2006, Gonzales served as a consultant and trainer in the aerospace manufacturing industry.

John Anderson has spent more than 13 years teaching in higher education and more than 25 years as a practicing engineer in industry. His research and consulting interests are in the areas of manufacturing process design and he is a Co-PI of the NSF funded "Advanced Aerospace Manufacturing Education Project."

Abstract

Aerospace Manufacturing Modules for Existing Manufacturing ProgramsFor several years the aerospace industry has been undergoing radical change driven bythe pressures caused by an aging workforce and a customer base that has been demandingdramatic increases in productivity. Retirements have and will continue to lead to valuablemanufacturing knowledge being lost during very critical times. In 2006, a team of facultyfrom four institutions received NSF funding to help address this problem through a bettereducated incoming workforce via aerospace centric manufacturing course modulesdesigned to be inserted into existing manufacturing courses. The modules developedover the three year life of this grant have been very well received and are currently beingused by several community colleges, a couple universities, and a couple aerospacecompanies.In 2010, the team received a second NSF grant to continue their work. The new projectwill largely focus on the development of a few more key modules, the enhancement ofseveral of the existing modules with defined laboratory exercises and kits and a publishedworkbook for use with the modules. This paper will provide background on the first NSFproject and describe the current and pending accomplishments with the most recentproject. Details will be presented on the project’s modular approach to aerospacemanufacturing education including: topic selection, module development, lab kitdevelopment, module implementation, and module dissemination.
