R Natarajan received his B.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (of the then Mysore University) in 1961. Subsequently he obtained the M.E. degree of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; and the M.A.Sc and Ph.D degrees from the University of Waterloo, Canada. He has worked as a National Research Council Fellow in Canada, and as a Humboldt Research Fellow in Germany.
He served as The Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras from 1995 to 2001, and as the Chairman of The All India Council for Technical Education, a statutory body of the Government of India, from 2001 to 2004.
He was the Vice – President of The Indian National Academy of Engineering during 2002-2006, and the Chairman of the Research Council of the Central Fuel Research Institute, Dhanbad during 1995-2005. He is currently the Chairman of the Board for IT Education Standards of Karnataka.
He is a Fellow of: Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian Society for Technical Education, National Academy of Social Sciences, Institution of Engineers (India), Indian Institution of Plant Engineers, National Foundation of Indian Engineers, Indian Institution of Materials Management, and Madras Science Foundation.
He has been conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees by: The University of South Australia, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (A.P.), Kanpur University(U.P.), Nagarjuna University (A.P.), Purvanchal University (U.P.) and NIT, Agartala.
ASEE INTERNATIONAL LEARNING FORUM JUNE 9-10, 2012, San Antonio INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION IN CURRICULUM AND LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT Dr. K. P. Isaac Member Secretary, All India Council for Technical Education, India kpisaac@yahoo.com Abstract The aim of any country’s higher education system is sustainable developmentand achieving higher growth rates. India aims to increase the higher educationenrolment rate from about 12 percent at present to 30 percent over a decade. Technicaleducation at all levels in India is witnessing a consistent growth by establishing newinstitutions, addition of courses and increase in seats mainly with private participation. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory body of Govt.of India is the national level apex body with its mission of developing and promotingquality technical education in the country has been constantly giving importance toimprovement of quality by constantly upgrading the curriculum. AICTE brings out modelcurriculum in all specializations and programmes governed by it viz, Engineering,Management, MCA, Pharmacy, Hotel Management and Architecture. The curriculum development in India is done keeping the outcome basedapproach or the competency based approach. The National Institute of TechnicalTeachers Training and Research (NITTTR) located at four different places in India carryout research and assistance to institutions and universities in developing thecompetency based curriculum for engineering courses at various levels viz, Diploma,Degree and Post Graduate. The use of Information Communication Technology in the teaching learningprocess is promoted in India through a nationally coordinated project – National Projecton Technology Enhanced Learning. As part of this project, e-contents are developed forvarious courses and virtual laboratories are being established across the country. This paper discusses the above and similar practices in achieving qualityeducation in India and the areas of mutual collaboration with other countries.
