AB  -                         Assessing the Role of 21st Century Skills                                      on Internship Outcomes                           in a Steel Multinational EnterpriseAbstract    The evolution of work and the workplace have important implications for education. TheCommittee on the Assessment of 21st Century Skills of the National Research Council andNational Academy of Sciences has been developing one of the most important efforts to definetheoretically those skills at individual level to face the 21st Century challenges. In 2010 theCommittee defined three categories of skills: cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal as atheoretical framework of skills for a broad range of jobs. The goal of this paper is to address,from an employer’s point of view, the following question: which of the 21st Century skills arerelated to better internship outcomes?    This study uses employer assessments of interns with respect to their main tasks, learning,and the overall internship performance. A database was built in order to execute this study; itincludes the whole population of interns, from summer 2006 to summer 2010, of a MexicanNational Internship Program of a multinational enterprise in the global steel industry. The datahad been collected using a unique instrument that was developed to evaluate the professionalperformance of the full time employees in the firm; the same instrument was applied to evaluatethe professional performance of each intern. A general model of internship outcomes wascreated using the three categories of 21st Century skills. Linear regression was used for maintask and learning performance as internship outcomes and ordered logistic regression for overallperformance as global internship outcome. The results confirmed that cognitive intelligence ortechnical skills are needed but not sufficient to have success in executing professional tasks;some interpersonal and intrapersonal skills were also significantly associated with betterprofessional performance as an intern.
