Robert Gilbert Sinclair Community College

Robert Gilbert is an Associate Professor of civil/architectural technology and Technical Director of the Center for Energy Education at Sinclair Community College. He has a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Dayton, a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Dayton. His area is energy efficiency and renewable and alternative energy. He is a member of the Ohio Board of Building Standards filling the position of Renewable Energy. He has developed the energy efficiency, renewable/alternative, green programs, and courses at Sinclair Community College.

Abstract

Developing Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Assessment Programs in Community CollegesEnvironmental issues, U.S. dependence on foreign oil and depleting fossil fuel reserves: all ofthese issues are increasing awareness for the need for energy efficiency education programs incommunity colleges. Almost half (49%) of all energy produced in the U.S. is consumed by thebuilding sector. This is almost the same amount of energy consumed by both transportation(28%) and industry (23%) combined. [1] According to the U.S. Energy InformationAdministration, fossil fuels supply 76% of the total building sector energy consumption.The development of training programs which teach residential, commercial, and industrialenergy assessments can be accomplished with a series of seven courses: 1. Weatherization Training 2. Building Performance Training 3. Architectural Energy Analysis 4. Introduction to Energy Management 5. Energy Control Strategies 6. Commercial and Industrial Assessment 7. Capstone ProjectWeatherization Training incorporates hands-on training of the installation of various types ofinsulation, performance testing with the blower door and duct blaster, air sealing procedures andverification, indoor air quality standards and verification, and combustion appliance zone safetytesting. Building Performance Training incorporates many of the subjects cover inweatherization training but focuses on the assessment procedures with respect to utility study,data collection, moisture and mold issues, systems operation, and indoor air quality.Architectural Energy Analysis covers in depth building sciences, energy use simulation softwareoperation, in depth utility analysis with statistical procedures, estimation of energy savings andcost associated with retrofits of designs, and report format and writing. Introduction to EnergyManagement incorporates utility rate structure, energy management programs, and a survey ofenergy saving opportunities in commercial and industrial facilities. Energy Control Strategiesincorporates spreadsheets, computer programs, and performance simulation software to estimateenergy savings, implementation costs, CO2 reduction, and utility cost saving with theimplementation energy saving opportunities. Commercial and Industrial Assessmentincorporates, utility analysis, on location assessment format, operation of data collectionequipment, and compiling final reports. The Capstone Project provides the real-worldexperience of the entire assessment experience.Residential assessment education programs have the assessment protocol of the BuildingPerformance Institute, Building Analyst Professional or RESNET as a guideline for programdevelopment. ECO Building Checklist.doc, provides an assessment format for commercialbuildings which can be a guide to developing the commercial assessment programs. [1] TheState University of New Jersey, Rutgers provides a complete Modern Industrial Assessments, ATraining Manual Version 2.0. [2] This presentation demonstrates how these and other resourceswere used to develop the assessment, educational programs.
