Abstract

Embedding video-based learning modules for library research methods in an online graduate engineering degree programAt University ______, the College of Engineering has launched a fully online Master's degreeprogram in integrated circuits. Students are required to complete a comprehensive capstoneproject and therefore access to and training on use of the research literature are importantlearning objectives.The Library plays an important role in providing the information resources and instruction tohelp students succeed in their capstone. We designed online training modules for self-directedinformation literacy training. To this end, we provided 24/7 instruction that is responsive tocommon information challenges, used rich and robust instructional videos to explain informationconcepts and demonstrate search techniques, accommodated different learning styles in ourtraining, and engaged students through interactive and feedback-rich instructional resources.Instruction was centered on skills development to resolve core information challenges in theresearch process - from phrasing a research question to writing a citation in the final capstonepaper. This problem-based approach created an authentic research experience for study. Witheach of the problem modules, we produced "bite-sized" instructional videos that walked studentsthrough the process of library research. This was a rich multimedia learning environment withaudio explanations, videos to demonstrate information sources and techniques, graphics toillustrate key concepts, and even music to keep the viewer interested. At the end of eachlearning unit, quizzes with interactive feedback helped students assess their learning. All ofthese learning materials were embedded into the students’ learning management system forconvenient access.By embracing popular digital and web-based formats and publishing sites, by experimentingwith emerging instructional techniques, and by integrating information literacy into thecurriculum, we are filling an important role in online education while also showcasing thelibrary's engagement with cutting-edge innovation. These elements help libraries support fully-online degree programs in a rich, robust, and scalable manner.This paper documents our team and technology-driven approach to developing the instructionalmodules, outlines our lessons learned, and discusses issues we encountered in supporting fullyonline degree programs.
