Abstract

Enabling Institute-wide Multidisciplinary Engineering Capstone Design Experiences This paper presents an overview of the challenges and solutions with which the author’sInstitute is experimenting for successful implementation of a multidisciplinary capstone designprogram. Specifically, the paper focuses on the proposed course design and pathways forimplementation of the course across various engineering schools within the College ofEngineering at the Institute. The author’s Institute is currently conducting a unique experiment by offering an Institute-widespecial topics Interdisciplinary Capstone design course. All schools within various colleges ofthe Institute have the option to opt into the course and it has been currently approved as asubstitute to existing traditional capstone design courses in the Schools of MechanicalEngineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering and the department of BiomedicalEngineering. This paper presents the design of a minimalistic syllabus and course structure thatenables students to work in a multidisciplinary team while allowing them to satisfy their homeschool requirements. In the absence of a multidisciplinary capstone design course, the transition from traditionalmono-disciplinary capstone design course raises issues of managing faculty teachingexpectations, providing administrative support to faculty and student teams and formingmultidisciplinary functional student teams. In order to assist with resolving these issues, anonline portal was developed with an objective to support the implementation of multidisciplinarycapstone design projects. Faculty and student feedback was solicited in order to conceptualizeand develop the website to support the entire process of how a multidisciplinary project could becreated and presented, how a student team from various schools would form and, finally, howfaculty would accept (or potentially reject) the project and the teams. This paper presents thedesign of this web portal along with a discussion on the scope for further improvement.
