Keith S. Pate Purdue University, West Lafayette

Keith Pate joined Purdue University as a Master’s student at the School of Engineering Technology in January 2021. Keith received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Southern Indiana in 2018. His research focus is currently in fluid power and mechatronics. Prior to his Masters Studies, Keith was as a Test Engineer and Supplier Quality Engineer at Allison Transmission between Jan, 2019 – Jan, 2021.

The primary focus of Keith's research is fluid power systems and mechatronics. His research interests include improving efficiency and performance of of various systems, including automotive engines and transmissions. Keith is active in a research team who focuses on improving and enhancing engineering education through the use of active learning methods and educational tool design.

Biography
Dr. Jose Garcia has been involved in several local and statewide recruitment events, where he was able to develop short workshops in fluid power and STEM. He is also working on the development of a new generation of hydraulic components and systems that can operate using environmentally friendlier fluids. Dr. Garcia has plans to actively continue the development of practical teaching tools that bring industry applications to the classroom.

Farid Breidi Purdue University, West Lafayette

Dr. Farid Breidi is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Technology at Purdue University. Farid received his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering degree from the American University of Beirut in 2010, his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012, and his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Purdue University in 2016.

The primary focus of Farid's research is modeling and design of fluid power and mechanical systems. He is interested in integrating machine learning and data analytics to improve the efficiency and performance of conventional and digital fluid power systems. Farid is also active in conducting pedagogical research, where his team focuses on improving the educational experience of students through the development of educational demonstrators.

Abstract

This paper discusses the benefits of using interactive tools in Engineering Education. The use of interactive tools as an aid in education reinforces the relationship between theoretical concepts and their physical meaning. Associating abstract theories and mathematical concepts with physical meaning makes fundamental engineering concepts more appealing and tangible. Special in-class assignments are given to various groups of students, requiring them to collaborate with their colleagues by utilizing various interactive tools to achieve a simple goal in introductory engineering courses. This helps stimulate creativity and provides students the opportunity to apply their course learning outcomes to solve real world problems. Interacting with these tools, in parallel with their learnings, also gives students the opportunity to gain technical experience building, testing, and troubleshooting equipment, a skill that appeals to future employers. A tool was developed as a proof of concept to demonstrate the benefits of interactive tools in Engineering Courses. This tool incorporated mechanical, hydraulic, and electric systems and utilized a modern user interface controlled using a touch input. The integration of all these systems provided the flexibility for this tool to be utilized in different courses and events, appealing to a wider audience.
