Tanya Stanko is a Vice-Provost of Education at Innopolis University. She specializes in launching new Universities from scratch, including setting up curricula and polices, recruiting faculty and students. She holds PhD in Computational Aeroacoustics from the University of Leeds and worked as researcher at Technical University of Munich. Her current research interests include investigation of the professional competencies, gender diversity in engineering, relations between universities, industry and government.

Abstract

Equipping graduates for the 21st century workplace: what IT competencies matters most to stakeholdersIT University Innopolis is a newly established IT university in Kazan, Russia, withthe mission to foster innovation in order to address critical scientific, technologicaland innovation challenges and gaps facing Russia and the world in IT industry. Theeducation system is designed to foster the graduate qualities that are needed in themodern rapidly changing world. The University proposed a framework ofcomprehensive competencies to be developed in it’s graduates.As a reference framework for competencies we used ABET , CDIO Syllabus, andresults of the recent study conducted among stakeholders including those in Russia.Here we intend to understand how different stakeholders at different stages of theirlife and career perceive relative importance of competencies. In order to answer thisquestion we have conducted an extensive survey including tree groups ofstakeholders: high-school pupils intending to study IT, undergraduate studentsperusing degree in IT, and professionals working in IT area. The results show thatthere is a pronounced shift in the relative importance of competencies among treegroups under investigation: the appreciation of 21st century skills grows jobexperience.“Unium” is a supplementary education company in Russia, which provides coursesfor school children in 15 subjects, including mathematics and computer science. Thecompany has been operating since 1991 with the mission of “contributing toharmonious development of children”. One important aim of our education programsis - let school children understand the essence and content of their possible futurework, including IT jobs. Based on this research results we will be able to tailor ourcomputer science programs content and adjust teaching methods closer to the currentand future needs of our students, thus equipping them better for the 21st centuryworkplace.
