Paul Anderson is a registered professional engineer with over 30 years of combined industrial and academic experience related to water resources. At the Illinois Institute of Technology for more than 20 years, he teaches courses in water chemistry, ground water contamination, chemical transport in the environment, and industrial ecology. His recent research interests emphasize wastewater reuse and watershed management. Paul is the director of the Environmental Engineering program and a co-director of the Armour College of Engineering Distinctive Education working group.

Abstract

Experiential Learning Opportunities Exploring the Impact of Engineering Solutions- A Collaborative GenEd-Engineering EffortIn our institution, General Education requirements for Bachelor Degrees include 6 credithours dedicated to project work that brings students from all across the university to workin teams that resemble a professional work setting. These inter-professional student teamswork with faculty and/or industry mentors on a wide range of projects. Students playdifferent roles in the team and are encouraged to approach the project from their ownperspective and to contribute their respective discipline-specific knowledge whileperforming within the assigned professional role in the team. Engineering students inthese inter-professional teams are often addressing (and leading) the technical aspects ofthe project using engineering approaches to problem solving.To take best advantage of this GenEd requirement and its potential impact in engineeringeducation, our college of engineering has team-up with GenEd to create and lead projectsthat provide opportunities for students to address significant contemporary challengesthat can benefit from engineering solutions. With the core commitment to prepareengineers that work towards improving life and preserving humankind, we aredeveloping engineering-led Cluster Projects that reside under a Theme-centered umbrella.The Themes that we are currently focusing in are: Energy, Health, Security, and Water.We are reporting on an “Urban Systems” inter-professional project that (in the context ofthe themes of energy, heath, security and water) examines challenges posed by urbansystems, propose creative solutions and form innovation teams focused on the researchand development of prototype solutions. We are also supporting students to explore andwork on student-led projects of their own definition that can lead to the development of acluster inter-professional project to be offered on-campus to impact a large number ofstudents. A project exploring opportunities for healthcare infrastructure innovation indeveloping countries has already emerged from this effort.In addition to the opportunity to apply their respective discipline-specific knowledge,these Theme-centered, engineering-led, inter-professional projects provide our studentswith team work, leadership and project management skills while contributing to the broadeducation necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in global,economic, environmental and societal context.
