Abstract

The author of this Tricks of the Trade paper has been collecting reflections related to being a graduate student based on his own prior experiences. The author is now graduated and is in a faculty role. The author hopes to share these lessons and reflections, before he "forgets" how to be a grad student.

The themes of the paper include many intangible aspects of grad student life. It will discuss how to balance the many roles a grad student must undertake and how to recognize and survive forms of academic hazing. The paper will also talk about personal life aspects, such as how to balance academic priorities with life aspects such as long distance relationships, breakups, or loss of a family member.

By writing these reflections down in a formal paper and presenting them in an interactive conference presentation aimed at current and prospective graduate students, the author hopes contribute resources that are useful for both formal and informal graduate student development.
