Ahmed Cherif Megri North Carolina A&T State University

Dr. Ahmed Cherif Megri, Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering (AE), teaches capstone, lighting, electrical, HVAC and energy design courses. He is the ABET Coordinator for the AE Program. His research areas include airflow modeling, zonal modeling, energy modeling, and artificial intelligence modeling using the support vector machine learning approach. Dr. Megri holds a PhD degree from INSA at Lyon (France) in the area of Thermal Engineering and a ”Habilitation” (HDR) degree from Pierre and Marie Curie University - Paris VI, Sorbonne Universities (2011) in the area of Engineering Sciences. Prior to his current position, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming (UW) and before that he was an Assistant Professor and the Director of the AE Program at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He participated significantly in the development of the current architectural engineering undergraduate and master’s programs at IIT. During his stay at IIT, he taught thermal and fluids engineering (thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics), building sciences, physical performance of buildings, building enclosure, as well as design courses, such as HVAC, energy, plumbing, fire protection and lighting. Dr. Megri has written over 100 journal and conference papers and taught more than 30 different university-level courses in the AE area.

Abstract

Improving the Lighting Efficacy by Upgrading the Lighting of a Commercial BuildingOnly few years ago, the lighting design is mostly focusing on the lighting aspects, such asilluminance, color rendering, and color temperature. With the first edition of IECC was publishedin 1998, the electrical part of the lighting starts to control the design aspect, the use ofdaylighting, fixture selection and the project cost, in order to improve the efficacy. The Efficacyis the ratio of light output from a lamp to the electric power it consumes and is measured inlumens per watt (LPW). The successive versions of the code push further toward moresustainable design using lighting control, daylighting, harvesting lighting and new type of moreeconomic fixtures.This paper describes the upgrade of an industrial lighting system from T12 and T8 to T5 or LEDfixtures, to fulfil the Department of Energy's objective by removing less efficient fluorescentsystems from the market, and thus being more ecological friendly and increase lighting energyefficiency for commercial applications. This paper describes the design and economical aspectsof the project, by including all the aspects, such as labor of replacing the fixture and the ballast,maintenance, and depreciation.Most importantly, project methodology will be discussed. We discuss the design program fromstudents’ point of view, and the experience earned in design, integration, and also in written andoral communication skills. Methodology used to evaluate the effectiveness of the capstonedesign program in term of learning outcomes is also described.
