Z.J. Pei received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Kansas State University. He holds three U.S. patents and has published more than 70 journal papers and 100 conference papers. His current research activities include analysis and modeling of silicon manufacturing processes, traditional and non-traditional machining processes, and energy manufacturing.

Mr. Pengfei Zhang is a Ph.D. student in Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Kansas State University, USA. He holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology in China. She has published over 19 papers at international and national conference proceedings and international journals.

Abstract

Inclusion of green energy manufacturing contents in an introductory course on manufacturing processes and systems Pengfei Zhang, Z.J. Pei Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Kansas State University Manhattan, KS 66506 AbstractIMSE 250 is an introductory course on manufacturing processes and systems at Kansas StateUniversity. In this course, various conventional and unconventional manufacturing processes arecovered, and their target workpiece materials are primarily engineering materials (includingmetals, ceramics, plastics, and composites). Green energy manufacturing is considered a newworldwide industry. Countries that take leadership positions in this industry will have a globalcompetitive advantage. To enhance the global competitiveness of the U.S. in green energymanufacturing, a great need exists for a skilled workforce that has been trained in this field. Inorder to expose Kansas State University students to green energy manufacturing, some greenenergy manufacturing contents have been added to IMSE 250 recently. This paper presents theexperience of this attempt. Students’ feedback and comments are also provided.
