Abstract

Integration of Alternative Fuels and Turbine Research in an Undergraduate ClassroomNadir Yilmaz*, Francisco M. Vigil, Kyle Benalil, Miquela Trujillo, Isabella Acevedo-RodriguezDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, NM, USA *Tel: 575-835-5304 E-Mail: nadir@nmt.eduABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the emissions characteristics and fuel consumption ofdiesel, jet-A, kerosene and bio fuels in a microturbine. Experiments were conducted by studentsas part of Experimental Methods in Aerodynamics course designed to enhance the understandingof diagnostic methods and combustion processes in aerospace and alternative energyapplications. Students designed and built the experimental apparatus in addition to conductingtesting. Fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature, and emissions data was collected while themicroturbine was operating at the minimum and maximum engine RPM. Integrating the design, assembly, and testing of the microturbine into the curriculum showed to be an effective way tointroduce students to many aspects of aerospace engineering as well as to teach diagnosticmethods and techniques.
