Gouranga Banik, Ph.D., P.E., PMP., F.ASCE, is the departmental chair and professor of civil and architectural engineering at Tennessee State University. Dr. Banik completed his Ph.D. in civil engineering at Iowa State University. He has 11 years of experience working in both the private and public sectors as an engineer and/or project manager. A registered professional engineer and certified project manager (PMP), Dr. Banik has more than 40 refereed publications in the area of civil engineering and construction management. He has presented his research in several well-known and peer-reviewed conferences, such as ASEE, ASCE, ASC, WEFTEC and CIB, and published articles in those conference
proceedings. He presented his research all over the world, including the United States, Canada, Greece, Italy, Brazil, and the Philippines

Abstract

Design and Development of Project Management Course for Civil and Architectural Engineers Gouranga Banik, Ph.D., P.E., PMP., F.ASCE Chair and Professor of Civil and Architectural Engineering Tennessee State UniversityThe objective of this paper is to describe and evaluate the development and teaching of a project managementcourse tailored in content and format to meet the needs of civil and architectural engineering seniors.The key characteristics of the course are: • Content is specifically optimized to meet the needs of entry level engineers, rather than traditional pre- career students; • Through collaborative, problem and project based learning, students learn to apply project management concepts, tools and strategies while working as members of diverse teams; and • The course design intentionally engages the experience and real-world project responsibilities of the students, enhancing the learning by all students.Course content, logistics, evaluations, and lessons learned will be discussed in this article.
