Yasser Al-Hamidi is currently working as a Laboratory Manager in the Mechanical Engineering Program at Texas A&M University at Qatar. He is specialized in instrumentation, controls and automation. He worked as a Lab Engineer in the College of Engineering, University of Sharjah before joining TAMUQ. His other experiences include Laboratory Supervisor/Network Administrator at Ajman University of Science and Technology (Al Ain Campus), Maintenance Engineer at AGRINCO, Electrical Engineer at Ministry of Culture (National Theater Project, Damascus). Yasser's professional interests include precision mechatronics, real-time control systems design, networked control systems.

Reza Tafreshi received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from K.N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1991 and 1995, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, BC, Canada, in 2005. From 1995 to 1999, he was with PoloDej Company, Iran. From 1999 to 2000, he was a Research Engineer at the Department of ECE, UBC. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, in 2006. In 2007, he joined Texas A&M University at Qatar, Doha, Qatar, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His research interests include biomedical engineering, condition
monitoring, and machine fault diagnosis.

Abstract

Piezoelectric actuators are used in a wide spectrum of micro-positioning systems, such as Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, high precision fabrication and optical devices. However, these actuators exhibit badly damped vibrations and other nonlinearities which degrade the actuator accuracy and disrupt its desired output. Therefore, understanding how these actuators behave is crucial and primary task in making use of them in any micro-positioning system. In this paper, we aim at introducing a piezoelectric tube experimental setup that can be used to introduce students in the undergraduate level and interested in controls and vibrations to a number of concepts and techniques in this area. The proposed experimental setup consists of a piezoelectric tube actuator mounted on an aluminum frame structure, two fiber optic sensors to measure the displacement vibrations in the x and y directions and a heating element to control the temperature of the piezoelectric tube in order to investigate the performance of the system under different temperature conditions. This setup can be used in different course projects, allowing the students to investigate vibrations, different controls strategies and mechanical measurements principles. Additionally, working on this setup will allow students to learn how to deal with different types of sensors and their calibration procedures, effect of changing the surrounding conditions such as temperature on sensor dynamics and using system identification to model them. Moreover, the setup will allow students to gain understanding of hardware and software interaction, data acquisitioning and give them an idea about the applications of such actuators in the industry.
