K. Jo Min is Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department at Iowa State University. He teaches courses on production systems, closed-loop supply chains, and market-based allocation mechanisms. His education research interests include outcome assessment and objective evaluation, and has been serving as an ABET program evaluator for EAC and TAC and as a reviewer for various NSF engineering education panels.

Wenbo Shi received his Bachelor of Science degree in Automation from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2006, and received the Master of Science degree in Control Theory and Control Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2009. He is now a Ph.D. candidate and a research assistant in Operations Research Lab of Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State Univeristy, 3032 Black Engineering Building, 50011. Abstract

Learning Improvement in Leadership, Teamwork, and ContemporaryIssues through a Global Supply Chain ProjectIn this paper, we describe a learning improvement initiative centered on a productionsystems course project. This initiative addresses strategic production planning of ahypothetical global supply chain company with contemporary environmental and energyconsequences. The quantitative problems of this project are to be formulated and solvedby student teams where each team member assumes a unique position of responsibility.They are: domestic and foreign plant managers, a trade manager, and an environment andenergy manager. Given specific responsibilities for each managerial position, in solving aseries of quantitative problems where the leadership of each project team rotates amongteammates, students are not only able to produce multi-disciplinary solutions to thisglobal supply chain company, but also able to demonstrate their leadership and teamworkskills. This initiative is motivated by a multiple number of ABET outcome items. Theoutcome assessment of this project consists of pre- and post-surveys of the students aswell as the rubrics for each outcome item to be utilized by the instructors. The progressmade thus far in terms of input, process, and outcome including team organization andmanagement will be presented. Also, challenges in this project will be identified, andfuture direction will be discussed. 1
