Dr. Sheng-Jen (“Tony”) Hsieh is a Professor in the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University. He holds a joint appointment with the Department of Engineering Technology and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research interests include engineering education, cognitive task analysis, automation, robotics and control, intelligent manufacturing system design, and micro/nano manufacturing. He is also the Director of the Rockwell Automation laboratory at Texas A&M University, a state-of-the-art facility for education and research in the areas of automation, control, and automated system integration.

Abstract

Studies have shown that authentic learning experiences enhance student interest in a subject. Because industrial-scale automated systems are expensive, their availability at educational institutions is often very limited. Remote labs can potentially provide more opportunities for hands on, authentic and self-paced learning experiences—and are especially valuable during a pandemic. This paper describes the design, evolution, and lessons learned from hosting eight workshops on remote control of automated systems. Fifty-eight instructors from two-year and four-year institutions participated in the one-day workshop. Four different automated system were demonstrated and tested during the workshop. Evaluations suggest that the workshops were successful and encouraging. Future directions include providing 1) more hands-on exercises, 2) more examples of how to implement the principles, and 3) establishing a network of remotely accessible resources, including lessons plans and links to automated systems.
