Yanjun Yan received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology (China), and the M.S. degree in Applied Statistics and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University. She is an assistant professor in engineering and technology at Western Carolina University. Her research interests are statistical signal processing, diagnostics, and particle swarm optimization.

Abstract

A Kilobot is a small inexpensive robot, designed by the Self-Organizing Systems Research Group at Harvard University, with features that enable researches to test collective algorithms on hundreds or thousands of robots (called a swarm) without logistical problems such as programming and power cycling consuming an unacceptable amount of time.1. This paper illustrates a tested procedure on how to construct a Kilobot Swarm and programming platform. These procedures were created from a combination of the original Kilobot documents made available by Harvard University2, other materials later released by Harvard3, as well as some additional insight and modifications.
