Jayanta Kumar Banerjee University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus

Jayanta Banerjee is an ASEE Life Member and a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus. Dr. Banerjee received Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo and M.Ed. from Queen's University, both in Canada. He has worked in industries and taught at the universities in Germany, Canada, USA and Latin America. He has over hundred publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings and a few books to his credit. Jayanta was Vice President of the Rotary Club of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, and is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. A few years ago he was honored as an "Adopted Son" of the city of Mayagüez.

Abstract

Under the current COVID-19 crisis the only alternative to the classroom lectures seems to be the online virtual instructions. However, Mastery Learning, a more intimate communication between the teacher and the students ( and so important in Engineering Education!), between a mentor, a Guru and his/her disciples, cannot be established thoroughly through online teaching. First, the paper gives some examples from ancient Oriental histories and mythologies as well as from modern Occidental histories of science, mainly from physics and mathematics, to emphasize the significance of Mastery Learning. Second, it illustrates how Mastery Learning can be established and offered in the Undergraduate Engineering Curricula in a more meaningful manner even during the COVID-19 crisis. Third, and finally, the paper presents some instructional techniques to show how online instructions can still accommodate some aspects of Mastery Learning.
