Abstract

Engineering technologists apply basic engineering principles and technical skills to develop, design, and implement engineering and technology solutions, typically within the manufacturing, design, or product improvement fields. They support engineers engaged in a wide variety of projects and bridge the gap between engineers and technicians/operators in industry.

As modern manufacturing increases within the U.S., the demand for well-trained, competent engineering technologists is expected to increase. To meet this demand, a large, R1 institution in the mid-Atlantic region recently developed an engineering technology program within the college of engineering. The program introduces new curriculum, utilizes existing related student support services (ex: advising, tutoring, and career exploration), and provides opportunities for engineering students and engineering technology students to collaborate outside the classroom.

Students preparing for engineering technology careers benefit from extensive hands-on experience with common industry standard manufacturing equipment. To provide this experience, the new degree program utilizes an existing manufacturing facility which combines a manufacturing service center and a student-focused maker space housed within the college.

This poster will describe the new program; its educational objectives, student outcomes, and curriculum; as well as how students gain hands-on experience with common industry standard manufacturing equipment and the occupational employment outlook and salary expectations for graduates.
