Jul received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in Engineering Mechanics in 2007. He spent a semester teaching at community college in the Blacksburg, VA area and then spent two years at University of Massachusetts - Amherst expanding his research in finite element modeling and bio-mechanics and continuing to teach. He has been at the University of Southern Indiana since 2010 where he enjoys teaching finite element modeling, vibrations, modeling dynamic systems, dynamics and other mechanics classes.

Tom McDonald is an Associate Professor in the Engineering Department at the University of Southern Indiana. He serves as the Director for the MS Industrial Management and BS Manufacturing Engineering Programs. He earned his BS and MS degrees in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University and his PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech.
His research and teaching interests primarily include engineering education, lean, six sigma, discrete event simulation and modeling, and engineering economy. Tom has been involved in lean manufacturing and modeling of production lines since 1999.

Brad holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (1989) and an MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University (2001).

His past work experience includes eleven years at Delphi (formerly Delco Electronics) as an Advanced Project Engineer, eleven years at Whirlpool Corporation as a Lead Engineer/Solution Architect, and three years at Ivy Tech Community College as an Instructor/Program Chair of Pre-Engineering. Since 2015, he has been employed at the University of Southern Indiana as an Assistant Professor of Manufacturing Engineering Technology.

He holds three patents, has served as an IEEE section officer since 2004, and has been a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana since 2005.

Abstract

Online Testing with Blackboard – Lessons Learned (Perspective from 3 Engineering Faculty) During the past year, faculty managing concerns with COVID19 have turned to online exams to assist with summative assessment in their courses. As usual, there are benefits to using online exams in Learning Management Systems (LMS) and, of course, there are other aspects of testing in an LMS that could be done much better to suit our individual needs. In this paper, we will discuss some of the types of questions that we use in Blackboard Exams and some of the computer tools that we use to create them. We will discuss some of the successes that we have had, some tricks of the trade that we’ve used to address our objectives. Finally, we will discuss some tools additional tools that we use to mitigate cheating.

This paper will touch on subjects such as: 1) Different types of Blackboard questions a. Calculated Formula b. Multiple Choice c. Fill in the Multiple Blanks 2) Software tools to help write questions (e.g.) a. Mathematica, b. Excel, and c. Visio 3) Handling multi-part questions 4) Mitigating cheating using software
