Ali DUPE Shakouri Purdue University

Ali Shakouri is the Mary Jo and Robert L. Kirk Director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He received his Engineering degree from Telecom Paris, France in 1990 and Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology in 1995. His current research is on nanoscale heat and current transport in semiconductor devices, high resolution thermal imaging, micro refrigerators on a chip, and waste heat recovery systems. He is also working on a new interdisciplinary sustainability curriculum in collaboration with colleagues in engineering and social sciences. He has initiated an international summer school on renewable energy sources in practice. He received the Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering in 1999, the NSF Career award in 2000, and the UC Santa Cruz School of Engineering FIRST Professor Award in 2004.

Abstract

Renewable Energy Summer ProgramThe ________ Renewable Energy Summer Program is a collaborative initiative betweenUniversity of ________, University of ________ and Danish Universities in which students getacademic credit at their home institutions. This year the program is in its fourth year, the first andthird years in Denmark, the second and this fourth year in California. For the first three weeks inAugust, fifteen students and eight professors from Denmark and California came together tolearn about and conduct research on the challenges of a rapid transition to a renewable energysociety. The students come from a multitude of disciplines and the aim of the program is to trainfuture policymakers, business leaders, scientists and engineers in understanding renewableenergy from a systems perspective that takes the technological, economic, environmental andsocial aspects of climate change solutions. The first ten days of the program took place at theUniversity of ________ and the last nine days were at the University of _________. All studentslived on campus except for a few local students whose residency was within few miles ofcampus. The important aspect of the program is to give the students and researchers an insightinto the ongoing research in Green Tech companies in Northern California. In order to meet suchgoal, students attended a two day workshop on “The Road to a 100% Renewable EnergySystem” held in Silicon Valley which consisted of participants from academia, industry, nationallaboratories and several countries. In addition, students participated in touring a variety ofcompanies in the Bay area, such as, Solyndra, Makani Power, Tesla Motors and SustainabilityBase at NASA Ames in Mountain View. Additionally, students attended lectures given byparticipating faculty and guest speakers and participated in hands-on activities. In the beginningof the program, students were assigned to work on a project of proposing a 100% SustainableEnergy Community. The choice of size and type of community was left to students. In groups offive, students delivered proposals and made final presentations. At the end of the program, weasked all students to answer a questionnaire and provide us with feedback.
