Abstract

XXXXXSTEP: Outcomes from a seven-year study of a high school recruitment programThis paper will present several outcomes of ___________ University’s ______STEP program. This program was initially piloted during the 2005-06 academic year with one high school andhas grown to twelve high schools during the 2011-12 academic year. In 2007, NSF funding wasawarded for the further development of _______STEP. Over 340 students and over 50 teachersfrom 17 high schools have participated in this program since its inception. ________STEP hastwo primary goals 1) to recruit new STEM majors to __________ University, and 2) to buildrelationships between university faulty and regional high school teachers. The mechanics of the ______STEP program have been presented in previous publications;therefore, only a brief overview of the program logistics will be presented in this paper. Instead, this paper will focus on the outcomes of the project and will quantify the effect of _____STEPon STEM enrollment and on university faculty/high school teacher collaboration.Enrollment data will be analyzed to determine the effect of _______STEP on STEM enrollmentat ______________ University. Additionally, the performance of students who enroll in STEMafter completing _______STEP will be compared with STEM students who did not participate in__________STEP. Retention rates of these students will be compared with their peers who didnot participate in ________STEP. Data will be presented by gender, ethnicity, and rural vs.urban high school setting. On a larger scale, STEM enrollment trends for _________ Universitywill be discussed. In order to attempt to measure the effect of _____STEP on the teachers themselves, this paperwill compare student performance from schools that participated in ________STEP with theperformance of students from schools which did not participate. Performance indicators willinclude overall GPAs, topic specific GPAs, and retention in a STEM major. Another measure ofthe effect on teachers will be the number of other ________________ University sponsoredprograms that the teachers attend. Qualitative responses from the teachers themselves will alsobe presented. An additional outcome of the _________STEP program has been several spin-off projects. Theseprojects will be briefly discussed. Although not a primary goal of ________STEP, these newprograms have provided alternative paths to the realization of the primary goals of________STEP: 1) increasing STEM enrollment, and 2) building relationships with regionalhigh school teachers.
