Abstract

An Alternate Pathway to Engineering: Community College Students Utilizing Summer Research Experiences to Improve Transfer into Four-Year InstitutionsCommunity colleges can serve as a means to increase diversity among bachelor’s degree earnersin engineering given the proportional representation of African Americans, Hispanics, NativeAmericans, and females among community college students. However, improving thematriculation and transfer of community college students into four-year science and engineeringdegree programs is important if these groups will be represented in top-ranked four-year degreegranting institutions. In order to facilitate successful matriculation and transfer it is important toexpose community college students to coursework and experiences that adequately prepare themfor success at a four-year institution. This paper describes the multidisciplinary summer researchprogram for community college students in science and engineering that is offered at theUNIVERSITY, which intends to prepare selected student participants for enrollment in a four-year institution within the UNIVERSITY system. A mixed-method study conducted amongparticipants in this program indicates increased self-efficacy, particularly as it relates toconducting research. This paper will present findings from the pre/post survey that wasconducted and the qualitative analysis of weekly journals among the participants. Otherinstitutions and programs can use the information shared to consider how to develop similarexperiences and how to assess those programs for efficacy.
