Abstract

The Master of Engineering Management Program at Memorial University of NewfoundlandThe Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program at Memorial University ofNewfoundland (MUN) in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, welcomed its first cohort ofstudents in September 2009, and is one of the first designated MEM graduate programs inCanada. In addition, the paper willpresent the results of a case study of Engineering Management practices in offshore Oil and GasEngineering firms in St. John’s, Newfoundland as an example, to draw the connection betweeneducational relevance and workplace practice of Engineering Management skills and concepts inone particular sector of significant importance to the province. Specifically, the results willexplore management challenges in local Oil and Gas Engineering firms, the process for selectionof engineering managers, and the development and training of engineers to become managers inthis sector.Memorial University is the largest degree-granting university in Atlantic Canada. Memorial’sFaculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers academic and research programs in CivilEngineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Oceanand Naval Architectural Engineering, and Process Engineering. Memorial’s MEM program is acourse-based graduate program that can be completed on a full or part-time basis and draws onthe expertise of both the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of BusinessAdministration.
