Julia M. Williams is Executive Director of the Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Aseessment and professor of English at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Her publications on assessment, portfolios, and engineering and professional communication have appeared in the Journal of Engineering Education, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, and the European Journal of Engineering Education. She is also Co-founder of the Rose-Hulman Leadership Advancement Program.

James Hanson is an Associate Professor of civil engineering at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where his teaching emphasis is structural analysis and design. For the past three years, he has served as part of the Leadership Advancement Program by helping develop and administer the Leadership Academy, the Workshop Series, and other leadership development events.

Samuel Peffers currently serves as Director of Planning at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., rated the number one math, science, and Eengineering institution in the nation by U.S. News and World Report magazine. He directs the Institute’s long range strategic planning effort. The Institute entered the data collection and synthesis phase of its next recurring planning cycle at the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year. Peffers has 24 years of planning and program management experience in public service and has donated his professional skills to various non-profit organizations numerous times.

Shannon M. Sexton Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Shannon M. Sexton is currently the Director of Assessment at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology where she designs and implements assessment activities ranging from small projects such as classroom assessments to large projects such as assessment of the Institute-wide student learning outcomes. She also assists faculty in planning, conducting, and analyzing projects and provides professional development opportunities in the area of assessment. She has presented her work in assessment and psychology at both national and regional conferences and has published in the areas of political and social psychology, as well as assessment and engineering education.

Abstract

The X College Leadership Advancement Program: Preparing Engineering, Math, and Science Students for Leadership Success in their Professional and Personal LivesGraduates of X College are recognized in industry for their superior technical skills, a result ofthe X College technical curriculum. Based on their problem-solving abilities, many of ourgraduates advance quickly, often assuming leadership roles in their organizations. The purposeof the X College Leadership Advancement Program is to provide students with educationalopportunities for leadership that match their opportunities for developing technical skills. Inaddition, we have developed assessment tools that help us measure the impact of X College LAPon students’ development as they prepare for successful careers and rewarding personal livesafter graduation.The X College is comprised of five components. First, the X College Leadership Academy is anintensive three-day-program that combines sessions on leadership theory with hands-onapplication. Based on a selective admission process, the Leadership Academy is designed andconducted by both faculty drawn from diverse disciplines and staff from multiple divisions onour campus (Students Affairs, Human Resources, Alumni Affairs, Development, and ArmyROTC). Sessions focus on Leadership Communication, Leadership Theory and Styles, andPersonal Strategic Planning. As a result of participation in the Leadership Academy, studentshave the opportunity to develop their personal leadership style, equipping them with tools tomake a difference in society.The second component of LAP, The Leadership Case Study Competition, is a program thatprovides students with an opportunity to practice problem solving skills, while applyingleadership theory and principles, to find a solution to a business/technology-oriented case. Thethird component, the Leadership Workshop Series, brings students together for one hour toexplore specific leadership topics and further develop their leadership skills. Past workshoptopics have included: Listening and Communication; Group Dynamics; Conflict Management;Community Impact; Personal Planning; Global Leadership; and Emotional Intelligence. Thefourth component is the Crisis Simulation Exercise, where students apply their skills to a real-world scenario.In an effort to promote leadership development in all facets of the campus community, LAP hasalso created the Leadership Speakers Series that brings demonstrated leaders to campus to sharetheir stories, expertise, and advice with students, faculty, and staff. Past Leadership SpeakersSeries events include: • Visionary Leadership presented by the X College former president and by a leader in the field of biomedical engineering devices • Servant Leadership in Difficult Times presented by Mary T. Miller and Tom Green, retired executives of Delphi CorporationThe purpose of our presentation is to outline the LAP, discuss the assessment tools we use toevaluate student outcomes for LAP, and demonstrate how LAP can be a model for otherengineering, mathematics, and science programs.
