A STEM integrated problem-based activity was developed for third grade students. This activity addressed the NGSS Standards, the Common Core Mathematics Standards and Computer and Technology Standards. The problem scenario engaged third grade students in a six-week challenge to design a tornado proof structure. Students worked in teams of four to engage in the engineering design process as they learned about weather, climate, and various hazards associated with weather. They applied their learned knowledge and the engineering design process to design a prototype of a tornado proof structure. This structure was tested using a leaf blower and bucket of water. Students had access to computers, books about weather and climate, climate data, and building materials. Throughout the duration of the lesson formative assessments, such as, observations, discussions, and daily reflections took place. In addition, a summative assessment which consisted of a presentation was required of each student team.
